About CO*RE

Collaborative for REMS Education

CO*RE's mission is to ensure that Immediate Release (IR) and Extended Release-Long Acting (ER/LA) opioids are prescribed, when indicated, in a manner that enhances patient well‐being and does not contribute to individual or public harm.

Founded in 2010, CO*RE now includes nine member-led healthcare professional organizations. The CO*RE organizations collectively represent 750,000 clinicians who work in a wide range of clinical settings including primary care, hospitals, emergency departments, pain clinics, birthing units, and hospice and palliative care centers. CO*RE reaches a variety of healthcare professionals, including medical doctors, doctors of osteopathy, physician assistants, pain specialists, and nurse practitioners.

Primary care providers, pain management, addiction and palliative care specialists, and clinicians representing all arenas of the health care system struggle to successfully manage their patients' pain. For many patients, IR and ER-LA opioid medications constitute an effective and valuable element in the pain management plan. However, opioid prescription involves many complex issues of misuse, abuse, addiction, adverse effects, and fear of legal and regulatory action. In order to address risk and safety concerns, reduce serious adverse outcomes, and simultaneously ensure that pain patients maintain necessary access to opioids, the FDA has developed a Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) that applies to all opioid medications.

The NPHF sponsors the live continuing education curriculum, which was developed by CO*RE, "Pain Management and Opioids: Balancing Risks and Benefits," at national, regional and state nurse practitioner conferences. We also have an online program available tuition-free listed below.

Striking a Balance: Pain Management and Opioids- A case-based curriculum

Our case-based session delivers a real-world educational experience through a series of cases and supporting content mapped to segments of the FDA Blueprint. This allows faculty to teach the application of concepts, fostering an engaging approach to pain management education.

The course curriculum is fully compliant with the FDA’s September 2018 FDA Blueprint for Opioid Analgesic REMS Education and the 2022 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Clinical Practice Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Pain. This session also meets many states’ requirements for controlled substances CE.

Optimizing Patient Care through Telehealth- Pain Management & Opioids: Balancing Risks & Benefits

Jan 3.png

This one-hour course augments the CO*RE REMS education by providing strategies for successful pain management visits with your patients via telehealth.  Clinicians may have had little to no training on the communication and clinical skills needed for telehealth patient encounters.  Most have never learned how to “see” a patient on video during medical training. Our goal for this education is to help increase the effectiveness of your pain management telehealth visits and keep your patients engaged.
